Israel Strikes Yemeni Ports and Power Plant: Tensions between Israel and Yemen’s Houthi rebels have flared up once again. In the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, the Israeli military launched powerful airstrikes on multiple locations in Yemen, including three key ports and a power plant. This is the first Israeli attack on Yemen in nearly a month.
The Israeli forces confirmed that they targeted Houthi strongholds in the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa, and Salif, along with the Ras Qantib power plant. These attacks were carried out in response to continued assaults by the Houthis on Israel and commercial ships in the Red Sea.
Earlier in the day, a ship near the port city of Hodeidah was hit in a separate attack. The vessel, reportedly Liberian-flagged and Greek-owned, began taking on water and its crew had to abandon it. Although no group immediately took responsibility, experts believe it fits the pattern of past Houthi attacks.
One of the major targets in the Israeli strikes was the Galaxy Leader, a ship the Houthis seized in late 2023. Israeli officials said the Houthis had installed a radar system on the vessel to monitor ship movement in international waters. Israel claims this radar was being used to support hostile operations by the Houthi group.
Before launching the attack, the Israeli military had issued evacuation warnings to people in and around the three Yemeni ports. Despite the warnings, Houthi-run TV station Al-Masirah reported that several strikes still hit key areas, including Hodeidah.
The recent rise in attacks is linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which began in October 2023. Since then, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have repeatedly launched missiles and drones towards Israel and disrupted shipping in the Red Sea. Most of these attacks have been intercepted, but the threat remains constant.
Israel’s latest actions send a strong message of retaliation. With global shipping routes affected and fears of wider conflict, many are watching closely to see what comes next in this tense situation between Israel and the Houthi forces in Yemen.
