Guwahati: Contractual TET teachers protest at Kahilipara seeking regularization of jobs

Guwahati: Thousands of contractual TET teachers staged a massive protest in front of the Sarba Siksha Abhijan office at Kahilipara, Guwahati, today forcing police to up security bandobast besides also taking several protesting teachers into preventive detention.

Around ten thousand contractual TET teachers joined the protests in support of their various demands that include regularization of jobs and pay and other amenties at par with their regular counterparts.

Teachers from across the state gathered outside the Sarba Siksha Abhijan office since early morning hours. Many teachers, who were on their way to Guwahati to join the protest, were detained by police at different places.

Speaking to News Live one of the protesters said, “We are working as TET teachers for the last 10 years on a contractual basis and we want the state government to regularise our jobs. Currently, the candidates who pass the TET exams are getting permanent jobs but we who are working for so many years are being neglected. This is sheer unfair and that is the main reason we have come together and staged the protest against the government.”

Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said that 16,000 TET qualified candidates will be appointed by June.

The chief minister made the statement at the ongoing budget session of the Assam Assembly.
