Mortal remains of Kopili Hydel Project victims to reach home today
Guwahati: The mortal remains of the three victims of the Kopili Hydroelectric project would be handed over to their families today.
The bodies are currently being kept at the Garampani hospital in Umrangso.
Three persons including 2 senior officials of the Kopili Hydroelectric project under NEEPCO lost their lives after water overflowed from the reservoir of the hydel power project yesterday in Assam’s Dima Hasao district.
The deceased have been identified as Jayanta Hazarika Manager of the Civil branch, Anupam Saikia Deputy Manager (Civil) and Dimaraj Johri, who was a contractual employee of the NEEPCO.
The deceased were heading to close the intake gate of the reservoir when the incident took place.
The exact location of the tragedy site is said to be in the 5 kilo area.
It may be mentioned that incessant rainfall led to a rise in the water level downstream following which the intake level at the reservoir crossed the permitted limit.
As per sources, maintenance work was going on at the site for some time now but heavy rains in Meghalaya led to a sudden increase in water levels.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom has descended at Anupam Saikia’s hometown at Tekelagaon in Eastern Assam’s Jorhat district. The deceased has been survived by his parents, wife and his 7-month old child.
A similar situation also prevails at Digboi in Tinsukia district which is the hometown of deceased Jayanta Hazarika.
