Assam artist Nayanmoni Mura grabs Best Youth Artist award at Toronto Women Film fest

In yet another achievement for the Assamese film ‘KUMU’ team, Assam artist Nayanmoni Mura receives the Best Youth Artist award at Toronto International Women Film Festival this year.

Nayanmoni Mura who is a class 9 student hails from Dhontula Tea Estate which is in the Nagaon district of the Northeastern state of Assam.

She was awarded the Best Youth Artist for her character in the Assamese film ‘KUMU’- directed by Akanshya Bhagabati which recently won the Best Short Film award at the SiGNS Film Festival of Kerala.

The film’s director and writer Akanshya Bhagabati informed that she received a mail from the film festival organizers in Canada after which the news was confirmed.

Bhagabati further said that the young girl from Assam won the prestigious award for her excellent performance in the lead role in KUMU- the song of a wingless bird.

It may be mentioned that the film KUMU depicts the life and journey of a 12-year-old Adivasi girl who was forced to sacrifice her independent life and education due to her family condition.

The film set in the tea gardens of Assam shows how the young girl residing in the tea garden is deprived of her happiness and dreams to manage her survival.

The cinematography of the film was done by Chida Bora and music credit goes to award-winning singer Tarali Sarma.
