OIL Hack: Assam headquarters shuts down computers, IT systems

Guwahati: The Oil India Limited(OIL) has fallen prey to cyber-crime on Tuesday as hackers attacked the headquarters in Assam’s Duliajan.

As per initial reports, international hackers have hijacked the main computer system of the OIL following which apprehensions are high that several key information and other data may be at risk.

All the computers and IT systems have been shut down because of the cyber-attack. Meanwhile, the OIL has also roped in agencies to deal with the crisis.

OIL has also withdrawn all their computer system from LAN connection after three to four computers were infected by virus on Monday.

Speaking to Northeast Live, PRO  OIL Tridip Hazarika said, “Yesterday we had breach of our IT wall and our servers were impacted by some malware viruses and this was detected immediately. All those computers, online systems, were removed and IT department took immediate steps to stop the damage.”

“The attack has serially impacted our operation and fair portion of our services are down. However, our IT team has ensured that no major damage has been done. Then again it is a very complicated ecosystem, things do happen, security has breached earlier but we were in a position to tackle those,” he added.

“Now we are hopeful that things will return to normal but it will take some time,” commented Hazarika.
