Assam Govt to set up Transit & Rescue camps for animals in Kaziranga

Guwahati:  Assam government has been contemplating to set up transit and rescue camps in Kaziranga to help stray animals during flood season, said state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday.

It was discussed during a meeting held between the CM and functionaries of Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC), targeted at capacity and capability building of vet care facilities.

“We also intend to set up transit and rescue camps in Kaziranga to help stray animals during flood season. Three officers will be sent to Jamnagar, Gujarat to study the facilities available in GZRRC and replicate the same in Assam,” Sarma said.

The state government has also decided to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GZRRC considering the rising cases of human-wildlife conflicts.

Meanwhile, the Assam government was awaiting the Centre’s clearance for an elevated road over nine corridors used by the animals of the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve usually during high floods.

The 35-km elevated road will run along an existing arterial highway. During the recent President of India Ram Nath Kovind’s visit to the state, CM Sarma appraised him about the project too.
