Kamrup Metro: 24,300 people affected by flood & Landslides in Guwahati

Guwahati: Incessant rainfall for the last three days has brought Assam and its capital city Guwahati to a standstill.

According to the flood bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) on Wednesday (June 15), a total of 24,300 people are affected by floods and landslides in the Kamrup Metro district.

While 677 citizens of Guwahati, affected by floods and landslides have taken shelter in three relief camps.

According to ASDMA, fresh landslides were reported from various parts of Guwahati for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.

There was no report of any fresh casualty on Wednesday. Earlier on Tuesday, four persons lost their lives following a landslide in Guwahati’s Boragaon area.

Waterlogging have been reported in several parts of the city. Two of the worst affected areas are Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar.

Reportedly, there are also shortage of drinking water in several parts of the flooded area.

NDRF and SDRF personnel, deployed in these areas, are using boats to rescue people and provide relief materials.

Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) is also working continuosly to restore power supply in the city. However, the power supply has been cut off in several flooded areas as a precautionary measure.

The Kamrup Metro district administration has advised people to exercise due caution and not to venture out unless absolutely essential.

The Kamrup Metro district administration has also issued an order directing all schools, colleges and educational institutions to remain closed for the second consecutive day on Thursday in the wake of a rainfall alert issued by India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“This is an unusual natural disaster. There is excess rainfall.. haven’t witnessed so much rain at one time in the past 20 years,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was quoted as saying by TOI.
