Assam: Big cat comes back home, says CM Sarma after two tigers spotted at evicted areas of Burachapori

Assam chief minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday shared photos of two tigers, trapped by hidden cameras after an eviction drive at Burachapori Reserve forest.

CM Sarma said, “We are committed to reclaiming the land which rightfully belongs to Assam’s diverse flaura & fauna.”

Taking to Twitter CM Sarma wrote,” The Big Cat comes back home! Beautiful sightings of not just one but two majestic tigers by our camera traps days after an eviction drive at Burachapori RF. ( 7th & 9th March) We are commited to reclaiming the land which rightfully belongs to Assam’s diverse flaura & fauna.”

On February 14, the district administration of Sonitpur started a drive to free the Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary from illegal encroachments.

The massive anti-encroachment drive was carried out to free nearly 1,892 hectares of land from illegal occupation, officials said.

“An encouraging sight! Our efforts to clear encroachment from Burhachapori WLS bore fruit almost instantaneously as a jumbo visited the evicted areas this evening. Over 2,000-HA land was cleared in Siali, Lathimari & other WLS areas in past 3 days without any untoward incident,” Sarma tweeted.

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation has been carrying out eviction drives in different parts of the state since it assumed power in May 2021, with two such exercises undertaken in December last year.

Setting aside opposition criticism, Sarma had on December 21 last year told the assembly that eviction drives to clear encroachment on government and forest land in Assam would continue as long as the BJP is in power.
