Namrata Borah death case: Assam CM requests Meghalaya counterpart for ‘fair and impartial enquiry’

Namrata Borah died after the vehicle which was driven by Anayatul Wadud, son of AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi, allegedly met with an accident in Nongpoh, Meghalaya, in the early hours of Wednesday (June 4)

As the Namrata Borah death case continues to be shrouded in mystery, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday requested his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad K Sangma to conduct a “fair and impartial enquiry” by a senior police officer to ensure that “all facts surrounding the incident are brought to light”.

“I request Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri @SangmaConrad, to kindly look into a tragic incident that occurred near Nongpoh Police Station in the early hours of Wednesday, June 4.

A vehicle bearing Assam registration number AS 01 EV 9578 met with an accident, resulting in the unfortunate death of a young woman, Namrata Bora, while four other co-passengers sustained only minor injuries.

A case has been registered at Nongpoh Police Station. However, in view of the concerns raised by the bereaved family and well-wishers, I request that a fair and impartial enquiry be conducted by a senior police officer to ensure that all facts surrounding the incident are brought to light,” Chief Minister Dr Sarma wrote on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.

Chief Minister Dr Sarma reached out to his Meghalaya counterpart after Namrata Borah’s father and other family members requested his intervention in the case, and sought a proper probe into the accident in which the other occupants of the vehicle which met with the accident survived without even suffering a bruise.

“I want the truth to come out. There are many unanswered questions. Why only she suffered fatal injuries while the others occupants of the vehicle did not even suffer bruises? Why did the car, if it met with an accident, left for Guwahati but did not take my daughter? Had her friends taken my daughter to a private nursing home, she might have survived?” Namrata’s father told News Live on Friday.

Namrata’s parents, along with other family members, alleged that their daughter might not have died in the accident but could have been murdered and it was later made to appear as if she died in the accident.

Namrata Borah of Komargaon in Golaghat district, who was practising at Gauhati High Court as an intern, had gone to Meghalaya around 1:30 am on Wednesday with four friends — Pragya Dehingia, Mriganka Baruah, Gayatri Borah and Anayatul Wadud, son of AIUDF MLA Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasimi.

The sudden plan to go on the joyride turned fatal when their car reportedly met with an accident in Ri-Bhoi district while they were returning to Guwahati.

Although Namrata died in the accident, her friends survived without even suffering a bruise.

Meanwhile, following intense media attention and question marks on what really took place on Wednesday morning, the other occupants of the vehicle — Pragya Dehingia, Mriganka Baruah, Gayatri Borah and Anayatul Wadud — presented themselves before investigating officers of Nongpoh police station on Friday night following which they were subjected to intense grilling by cops.
