In an unfortunate accident during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, around 36 pilgrims, including children, got injured after five buses in a convoy collided with each other on Saturday morning, July 5, 2025. The incident took place at Chanderkote in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district when the convoy was making a routine stop for breakfast.
According to police, the last bus in the convoy—believed to be from Madhya Pradesh—suffered a suspected brake failure and crashed into the four stationary buses ahead of it, causing a chain reaction of collisions. Most of the injured sustained minor injuries and were immediately taken to the Ramban District Hospital for treatment.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kulbir Singh shared that out of the 36 injured, nearly all are recovering well and eager to continue their yatra. “Three to four people may not be able to resume the journey, but the rest are fit to proceed,” he said. New buses are already being arranged to help the remaining pilgrims resume their spiritual journey towards the sacred Amarnath cave shrine.
Deputy Commissioner of Ramban, Ilyas Khan, visited the hospital and assured full support to the injured and their families. He also confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, although initial reports suggest brake failure.
This morning, the fourth batch of over 6,900 pilgrims had left from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. While more than 4,200 pilgrims were travelling to the Nunwan base camp on the traditional Pahalgam route, around 2,700 took the shorter and steeper Baltal route.
Despite the scare, the spirit of the yatra remains unshaken, and authorities are working hard to ensure the safety and comfort of all devotees. The district administration has been quick to respond, and the yatra will continue with the necessary precautions in place.
This incident is a strong reminder of the importance of vehicle checks and road safety, especially during such large-scale spiritual journeys.
