104 pigs were seized from Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express at Srirampur Railway Station near Assam-West Bengal border in Kokrajhar district today (July 6)
Despite an official ban on transporting pigs into Assam due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever, illegal transportation of pigs continues, particularly through trains. Members of Pig Rearers’ Association of Assam staged a railway blockade at Kokrajhar Railway Station on Sunday, protesting the violation of the transport ban.
The protest also coincided with the recovery of 104 pigs from the Dibrugarh-Kanyakumari Vivek Express at Srirampur Railway Station near the Assam-West Bengal border in Kokrajhar district today morning with Railway Police detaching the coach carrying the pigs.
The pigs, reports said, were being brought to Dimapur in Nagaland. This led to a delay of nearly an hour in the train’s departure.
Meanwhile, Kokrajhar police detained five protestors late Saturday night and held them at Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station.
Security was heightened at Kokrajhar Railway Station with both Assam Police and Railway Police increasing vigil.
