Elon Musk had on Friday (July 4) asked respondents in a poll on ‘X’ whether he should create the “America Party”?
Billionaire American businessman Elon Musk on Friday announced the formation of a new political outfit — which he named the ‘America Party’ — following his much talked-about fallout with President Donald Trump. Incidentally, the announcement came just a day after he floated the idea on ‘X’, formerly Twitter.
Musk officially declared the creation of the “America Party”, stating it was “formed to give you back your freedom”.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it! When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” the Tesla chairman said in a post on ‘X‘.
Earlier on Friday, July 4, Musk had asked whether he should create the America Party?
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” he had posted on ‘X’. Over 65% responders favoured the formation of a new party.
Motivation: This move stems from Musk’s break with Donald Trump over the recently passed “Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB)—a massive tax and spending package. Musk condemned the bill as “utterly insane and destructive” and warned it would worsen the national deficit
Public Feedback & Strategy: Musk previously posted a poll on X on July 4 (Independence Day), finding that over 65% of respondents favored a new political party. His strategic plan is to target “two or three” Senate seats and “eight to ten” House seats in key swing districts, enough to tip the balance in Congress.
Legal Status: As of now, no official filings have been made with the Federal Election Commission. It remains unclear how or when formal registration will occur.
Observations: Analysts note that third parties in the U.S. typically struggle, though Musk’s financial resources and focus on specific seats could give his effort early influence. Estimates show roughly 40% of Americans might support the idea, but genuine electoral viability is still to be seen.
Summary: Musk has formally floated the “America Party” as a response to what he views as runaway government spending. While he has popular backing and a focused strategy, there’s no paperwork yet, and the U.S.’s entrenched two-party system presents a major hurdle.
