Bihar man arrested for death threat calls to Mukesh Ambani, family

Mumbai police, in a joint operation with Bihar police, arrested a man from Bihar’s Darbhanga for making death threat calls to Mukesh Ambani and his family members. The accused, who is an unemployed man, has been identified as Rakesh Kumar Mishra, and he is being brought back to Mumbai.

On Wednesday, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai received two threat calls within five hours and the caller threatened to blow up the hospital. Threats were also issued against some members of the Ambani family.

“Within a few hours, with the help of Bihar police, one accused has been nabbed from Darbhanga in Bihar & the team of Mumbai police is returning to Mumbai along with the accused. Further investigation is underway,” DCP Nilotpal was quoted by ANI as saying.

“At 12.45pm today and again at 5.04pm a call was received at a call centre of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital threatening to blow up the hospital & threatening to take the lives of Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and Anant Ambani,” RIL spokesperson said in a statement.

“Acting swiftly in the incident of threat calls to Ambani family, a team of Mumbai Police detained a person from a block in Darbhanga, Bihar at midnight with help of Bihar Police. Team is on the way back to Mumbai along with the accused. Further investigation is being done in this matter,” police said in a statement.

According to the police, the accused has been booked under sections 506(2),507 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused is unemployed and hasn’t revealed the motive behind making the threat calls, they said.

In August this year, a jeweller was arrested after he allegedly called up the hospital and threatened to kill Mukesh Ambani and his family members. In February 2021, a SUV laden with explosives was found near Ambani’s south Mumbai residence ‘Antilia’.Later, some people, including the then police officer SachinWaze, were arrested in connection with the incident.

The Reliance group is involved with telecoms, retail, renewable energy and petroleum products. Recently, the home ministry increased the security cover of Mukesh Ambani to ‘Z +’ category based on the intelligence agency’s threat perception report.
